Jodi Arias Personality Disorders Looks can be Deceiving

This Jury looks right past Jodi Arias's demure affectations, her Peter Pan collars and strategically worn Barrettes. They hopefully have taken note of her when she forgets to "act" the vapid soulless eyes that often turned in without a moments notice to a  bitter and hateful stare - this when some testimony or witness got too close to the truth
.
Within this entire trial Arias's eyes are usually encased behind her cleverly procured for the occasion non prescription librarian "glasses". If the jurors pay attention to such things they will notice oddly Araias reads next to nothing and thus reading glasses are obviously a prop.

I hope the jurors have paid close attention to those eyes and her entire arranged face for that matter when a witnesses testifies about something that puts her in a bad light or even witnesses she dislikes such as Travis Alexanders other Girlfriends testify. Here we have seen actual unabashed stares.
there is no doubt she is an Sociiopath and thus an actress albeit transparent at times.

.Months and months of this drawn out trial has only insured  all evidence indicates that she pre-meditatively murdered Travis Alexander in a drawn out brutal fashion simply because she could not " have him" - and she would be damned if another woman "won"

The Alexander family needs not only a guilty verdict for Travis, they also deserve the appropriate sentence. which can only be what Arizona Law dictates for cases with such aggravating factors and zero mitigating factors, despite what this defense is most assuredly going to trot out for us.

What this murder should teach us is that women can be as dangerous as men - or worse in some cases because of societal mores and beliefs re women's non violent natures their weaker physical prowess add attractiveness and personality disorder to the mix and we have an extremely volatile person often laying in wait.

Unfortunately we are still programmed as a society to not think of women as potentially violent dangerous or life threatening. This needs to change. Sociopaths come in all shapes and sizes and when attractive this makes them more dangerous whether male or female.

At the very first sign of stalking, over the top possessiveness and certainly destruction of property whereupon one even suspects someone they are dating.might be guilty anyone and everyone must report the incidents to police and follow through:  ie Travis Alexander's tires were slashed twice when he began dating a different woman following his break up with Arias.

Tragically he did not follow up with Police regarding that tire slashing incident as well as a second tire slashing and an episode where his home alarm went off while his new girlfriend was over his house.

In the latter incident Travis and his new gal pal investigated and no one discovered within the house. Again, pursue the incident to Police creating an incident report and tell police your suspicions and stay away accordingly.

These seemingly small decisions are often the ones that can become life and death decisions within a relationships where one party albeit unbeknownst to the other party has a personality disorder. Yet these are the symptoms of such disorders and must be taken extremely seriously!

Travis did call Police back at some juncture to set up a follow up meeting about the tires slashing but  police were unable to reach him by phone when they tried to follow up on the complaint. This might be the same reason that women in stalking and partner violence situations, begin to waver about making official reports because the offender either reinserts them-self in their life or seems to go away and the victim doesn't want any waves.

In this case Alexander had begun a rekindling of a purely sexual clandestine relationship with Arias and obviously he saw the acts as nuisances rather than the flashing red danger signs that they were..

This is something that is all too common-place for women but we are not used to seeing this happen to/ with men. ie  Many women who have been battered, abused or threatened within relationships, will recant reports made to Police - as well as prosecutors and/or judges, if the crimes have made it to the court system.

This is due to a constellation of reasons, most prominent of which is the " battered woman's syndrome" a term coined by Lenore Williams a pioneer inn the field of abusive relationships and men that domestic predators. Ms Williams who has been interviewed about this case, has websites and several books worth reading and they may just save the life of you or someone you love.

The basic synapses of the syndrome in very very  is that within abusive relationships whether physical, emotional abuse or both, there are often high volatile episodes that involve either direct violence, which includes things like punching walls, blocking doors and threatening which too many teenagers and women don't see as violence. But in Arias's case, it was a relatively very short highly charged union that soured quickly when Arias's ant social behaviors began to surface.

Surreptitious acts of destruction of property and stalking behaviors such as the house alarm being triggered when a new girlfriend was at Travis's house Too often the victim if female is fearful but even if she is angry the same rules apply whereupon the aggressor will follow such acts up with" honeymoon period" where especially if the person has been hit or battered the batterer goes into a mode whereupon they realize they must reel back in their victim/ partner and they will use extremely solicitous behavior uncharacteristic affection, they might cry and be apologetic give gifts etc. In Arias's case, she used what she knew worked in the past - sex as a palliative measure, temporarily making him, the victim in this case, forget how serious this predation by Arias really was. Behaviors like this tend to escalate they rarely disappear, especially if one continues communicating with the disordered person.

Arias being a consummate psychopath used what she knew was Travis's weakness -albeit with his Mormon faith he seemed to carry a guilty conscience about his sex with Arias and sex in general.

It certainly appears that although highly sexual with Arias Travis Alexander had a mindset that she was dirty or bad for engaging in the things that he himself desired and almost perpetually pursued with her. Ironically, it would appear that part of his disdain for Arias might have been that she was too sexual despite the fact that he enjoyed it physically  At the same time, his religious teachings created a guilt which he transferred onto Arias once calling her " the perfect whore" etc.

Those words and other from Travis were from taped phone conversations, text messages and emails between Travis and Arias when the two were at the height of their dating / sexual relationship.Arias claims that Travis knew she was taping some phone calls as an aphrodisiac they could share replaying at some later date but this remains to be seen.

I have heard a few tapes and in at least one, Travis seemed to preface by saying lets start with normal life stuff and go from there" This leaves me to believe that he knew that at least one conversation was being taped but again his language was rife with trepidation conflict shame - experimenting with taping phone sex with Arias certainly was against his  Mormon dictum and his sex drive were pulling him in two directions.

This was a young man extremely conflicted about sex and women. According to arias after sexual relations with her from the start he would supposedly be cold and distant immediately afterwards. This supports a shame and disgust with her for being a willing participant to his desires. That shame, guilt transposed itself as disgust and coldness to Arias who became enraged eventually because she had hoped to use sex as a lure a way to"guarantee that she won Travis over by fulfilling his every sexual need and playing the "whore"

After the two broke up Arias undoubtedly figured she'd use her feminine sexual wiles as a way to
A)foist herself back into Travis's space and life. Once he'd begun dating other women and she perceived rejection and abandonment this is when I believe Arias got her grandmothers gun and began contemplating killing Travis. The phony robbery she set up at her grandmothers was 8 weeks prior to Travis's murder. Once she learned that Travis had changed the name on what had once been her ticket to Cancun Mexico, a trip Travis and friends had planned for months, Arias decided that if she didn't win him back and knock the other women out of his life, she was going to kill him.

On the day of the murder Arias posed nude in provocative sexual photos either during or after their daily sexual encounter. Several photos of Travis were taken where he looked somewhat apathetic for his part and not posing but rather in repose on his bed.

My guess is that Travis was immediately regretting having spent the time with Arias despite the fact that he willingly had sex with her. His face in the first shower photos looks annoyed. Some say he looks frightened, perhaps Arias was brandishing either a gun or knife at that point.

My first impression of the full face photo was that he looked annoyed with her, probably not wanting Arias to be taking his photos in the shower. The sex was over and he probably wanted her out . Even when times were "good" between the two Arias claims and this I do believe, that Alexander was always cold after they had any sexual relations once refusing to kiss her goodbye because he hadnt showered off the "lovemaking".

In Arias mind Travis was in full post sex mode and with the break up and the slashed tires things these qualities were probably exaggerated Travis was " washing her off of his body"

Remember he was readying himself to go on a trip with another woman and had just had a days sex romp with his ex girlfriend, a woman none of his friends approved of and indeed they all thought she was guilty of the tire slashing s on Travis car that had happened twice within two months period,
No-one was supposed to know he was physically involved with Jodi Arias.

The camera Arias used on Travis in the shower that ultimately caught a shot of her leg dragging his bloodied body was the same very expensive new Sony that he'd purchased for the Cancun trip (. It listed for 3800 dollars.)

Arias claimed in her third version of the crimes that Travis yelled at her for dropping his camera and body slammed her. This I do not believe at all.  She claimed Travis got angry easily throughout their union  and this has been verified by other women that dated him, although none reported physical violence except Arias. But.... Travis at 30 years of age had not had long term relationships and as such we don't know if there is any truth to her claims that he had a short fuse.

She claimed in her last statement to police that she scratched a CD that belonged to Travis during that sex romp murder day and that he had begun to berate her his anger escalating adding that his dog ran out of the room at the first sign of his masters temper. She added that this was a common happening when Alexander lost his temper. I hate to say it but this detail of that day amidst all of her lies, sounds as if it might be the truth; Animals do often run when their owners get angry, and if the owner has had the dog or cat for any length of time. and a habit of angering easily or often this makes a lot of sense.

I do think from what I can garner about Travis Alexander that he appears to have been a somewhat brooding or depressed young man. Many of his of the photos of him show a forced half smile that doesn't appear natural. At first I thought it was because the photos were taken by Arias or they were together in the photos. Then I saw a slew of photos of Travis before he met Jodi Arias and there was that same telltale These include family photos vacation photos and others. As I've said I do feel that Travis Alexander had some emotional and or psychological issues that we may never be fully aware of in hindsight.

Friends certainly don't want to speak critically of someone who has been violently victimized in a murder, not to mention, people in general simply aren't aware of subtler aspects of adult psychology, it is just not a part of our collective conscience.

However, with all of the violent crime that has befallen our nation, our societies, mental illness personality disorders are beginning to receive a bit more attention as its become painfully clear via repetitive violence that if we are to stop this escalation of violent crime,  everyone needs to take responsibility for increasing their own awareness and knowledge regarding all aberrant behaviors, not simply "mental illness" as some vague culprit. There are personality disorders that have nothing to do with mental illness. They are completely different than say bi polar and other mood  disorders, much less things like Schizophrenia and true mental illness where voices and hallucinations often occur.

We can no longer afford to be apathetic regarding all psychological disorders and conditions that make the likelihood of violence that much more likely. More often than not the people that commit singular brutal partner violence like this have shown symptoms that others have ignored or not taken seriously enough . The same can be said of mass murders serial murderers pedophiles and child abductors and murderers to terrorists of the domestic variety ie partner violence.

What is not the answer is the existing  trend  borne of fear and ignorance -  withl the media often guilty of spreading misinformation which can lead to prejudice of anyone who is different behavioral wise; This has led to  lumping brain syndromes such as Autism/ Aspergers with completely different mental illness or mood disorders, usually ignoring the statistically most dangerous anti -social personality disorder aka ie a sociopath. also known as a psychopath.

We are just not used to females especially ones that are attractive and carry themselves with a girlish demeanor  Do not be fooled. Women can be extremely dangerous narcissists and sociopaths - ie think Carla Homolka, one of the worst sociopath serial rapist/ murderess in Canadian history;  Blonde, blue eyed and pretty, she helped her fiance, also blonde attractive  rape and kill first her own sister who was 14, then four teenagers who carla would lure into thier car asking directions, kidnappe at knife point and helf them for days in their middle class suburban home torturing and raping them together before murdering them and disposing of their bodies in horrible fashions.

Carla Homolka is now a free woman and word is she moved to the united states after giving birth to a child after her prison sentence was over. Shed perceived a plea deal based upon flipping on her husband and claiming battered women syndrome as the provocateur of her participation  Years later video tapes surfaced that her lawyer had in his possession showing the rapes of 7 women and homolka completely enjoying herself torturing these innocent young girls acting as director not some fear filled compliant victim in her own rite as shed managed to convince a prosecutor and a jury years prior. By the time the tapes surfaced the plea deal had been made homolka was in a minimum security prison where photos showed her in evening dresses partying with other women in the " prison"  .

Sociopathology is undoubtedly one of the personality disorders that Jodi Arias has it involves a lack of empathy and true conscience. It has been bandied about that arias is also a borderline personality disordered women which as an armchair researcher I'd say BPD is on the mark as well; Arias fits about 9 of the required symptoms in the DSM .- which is the bible for mental illnesses personality disorders and brain syndromes.(One can find it online kindle or at a good old fashioned bookstore.)

One of the key features of borderline Personality disorder which women seem to have 10 times more than men, is a lack of depth, chaotic personal lives especially relationships, a propensity to swing to extremes, deep seated insecurity and lastly and most importantly fear and loathing of perceived imagined or actual rejection.

The lesson that we can all take from this terrible murder is to acquire as much knowledge about the symptoms of personality disorders, there are a gaggle of them, including narcissism which have the potential to make for dangerous relationships, be it romantic, workplace friendship or family.

High is the time that our society makes this knowledge mandatory for all people, starting with our teenagers as the enter the world of dating.

I personally kneww nothing of this until almost being killed by a sociopath who I didn't recognize as such. Years after the crimes I felt the need to validate what had happened and began this journey of research and awareness, my mind and heart intent on helping others to not make the same near fatal  mistakes borne of simple innocence and ignorance..

We cannot afford to be "innocent" any longer. While Personality disorders do not immediately equate with violence. There are a bevy of them including more innocuous ones such as dependency Personality disorder, avoidant P- disorder etc, but A handful such as Sociopaths Narcissists Borderline Personality disorders do carry a much higher statistical likelihood of committing  violent behavior.

At the very least, the most dangerous higher functioning PDs often cause constant upheaval in the lives that they intersect with as well they will  more often commit criminal behaviors such as fraud, theft destruction of property, stalking, assault and murder. The common thread of a lack of true empathy and  a self centered psychological mindset a gift for manipulating and deceit combine to make these people  not only violent but parasitical volatile and leaving the bewildered people who have had the misfortune of being related to them working with them or simply accidently " befriending them, with their own lives in turmoil having been a victim even without violence.

The answer: is to aqauint yourselves with this entire realm of psychiatric disorders; these people are everywhere in our day to day lives and because we are pre- programmed to think of murderers rapists and batterers as dripping with eccentric behaviors and appearances that  are " different" this is ridiculous.  The most dangerous blend in.

There are many good websites re Personality disorders that explain in laymen terms the key features and warning signs etc of  such persons.. We cannot afford the ignorance we have allowed ourselves any longer.

Learn from this horrible murder, Our future generations safety and wholeness depends on how we choose as individuals and a society to inform ourselves first and then lay the foundation of our newfound awareness regarding the slightest of  character nuances of persons who are likely to commit crimes like this and or many other destructive behaviors that can maim our children's lives.

Travis Alexander's Text To Jodi Arias - Business Insider

Travis Alexander's Text To Jodi Arias - Business Insider

"I want you to understand how evil I think you are"

This was part of a text to Travis Alexander to Jodi Arias two days before Arias set up a staged robbery at her grandmothers; her grandmothers 28 caliber gun was coincidentally stolen" during said Robbery"

Arias figured that Travis has seen through her perfected rehearsed act, a  classic sociopath she used whatever behavior she thought would get her what she wanted Using voice appearance even vocabulary and a feigned persona to entrap whomever her latest victim/ target is. In this case it was Travis Alexander, who for months has dated Jodi Arias and had begun to see some behaviors and actions that made him extremely uncomfortable worried and angry. He was angry at his privacy being perpetually invaded by the overly possessive Arias who obviously had expected her openness with her sexuality to be a shoe in in catching the prize -  Alexander .

Realize however that none of this incessant desire to be near and possess has anything to do with true intimacy or love; Sociopaths and borderline Personality's are incapable of true mature connections. Although the two Personality disorders differ greatly they have in common what many personality disorders do a selfish immaturity that is akin to narcissism and can become enraged easily if they perceive rejection abandonment or competition even. This can apply to sexual relationships romantic relationships work and family and any other situation where more than one person is in a what they perceive as competition with them - for anything.

Obviously after the tire slashing and some other stalking behavior by Jodi Arias despite his obvious attraction to what was a very pretty blonde curvaceous woman, the worrisome behaviors as well the lack of depth and the self centeredness had begun to wear on Travis and he'd been pulling away for some time according to close friends and family.

This set Jodi Arias's mind off on a murdered plot; if he was going to reject her and in such a humiliating fashion, shed gotten baptized into Mormonism in an effort to " win him over" she entered into a highly sexual relationship that went against all of the teachings that Alexander himself was supposed to be abiding by. According to arias Travis claimed at first that the types of sex they had didn't count and compared him to Bill Clinton who basically told the american public that oral sex didn't count as sex" in her statements to police when she finally admitted that yes she killed Travis but couldn't recall anything except shooting him in self defense"

This of course is ludicrous because medical examiners have stated that poor Travis was shot with a 28 caliber gun ( same as Jodi's grandmas missing gun) after he was already deceased because he did not bleed from the bullet wound to his head showing that his heart had already stopped when the shooting occurred.

It was sheer overkill. Arias had stabbed Travis multiple multiple times apparently chasing him from the shower to the sink where he forensics point to him either spitting up or spraying his own blood into the sink. He was stabbed so many times in his back and even the back of his head that the common belief is that Jodi was behind him chasing him with a knife and perhaps a gun, the gun might have been used to hold Travis at bay while she threatened taunted or informed him of the many things he'd done to deserve what she was about to do. This is my theory.

In the middle of that series of pictures that Jodi Arias took of Travis in his shower washing off all traces of the sexual session the two had just had - and that's how she undoubtedly viewed the shower as shed hoped the sex would sequeway into the two reuniting and Travis deciding to take her to Cancun after all. He had originally planned to take her months back but changed the ticket to another woman's name after their break up and the subsequent tire slashing s home alarm event etc.

Travis seems to be unaware o uninterested in the first few photos arias took he appears to be simply washing himself and not posing. Then at some point he looks at Arias and this is the photo that's become somewhat famous as Travis's face registers either extreme displeasure fear or anger or all three.
From there he begins to almost pose as if someone is holding a gun to him - we see him unnaturally crossing his arms as if to protect his heart or perhaps someone arias ordered him to in order to insure he wouldn't escape or try to take the gun or knife. Then at another point in the photos Travis is literally sitting down in the shower in an extremely unnatural way that I immediately assumed Arias had ordered him to sit.

The next bunch of photos were willy nilly and I'm certain reflected a struggle in one Arias dropped the camera and her clothed leg was seen in a pool of blood and Travis bloody body can be seen being dragged! That shot was obviously an accident with the camera going off as she might have dropped or slipped with it.

There was also a picture of the ceiling of the shower with the recessed lighting fixture another accidental shot while arias no doubt was struggling with either Travis or his body.

The photos are one of the things that make this murder so unique and awful. We literally are walked through a day of a sociopath who  planned to murder her ex beau using sex as a surefire method to enter his space; I think in Arias's demented mind she was giving a small leeway that if Travis wanted to be her boyfriend again and invited her to the Cancun trip , she may have chosen not to kill him.

However well never know. The fact is she dyed her hair dark brown from its usual platinum blonde just before she made the trip to Travis's home. She also rented a car asking for bright red from the rental agency a strange request as her own car was light colored and it thus seems again she was attempting to
hide the fact that she had been there. The stolen Gun really sinks her and solidifies the pre meditative angle with this murder. The gun that she shot Travis with was never recovered thus no definitive match could be made with her grandmothers stolen same caliber handgun. Yet its very damning evidence and much too coincidental along with the hair change the car and the fact that she drove straight to an ex boyfriends house after the murder surprising him with her new appearance as a dark brunette.

He told police that she had cuts on her hands with bandages and like OJ claims she cut herself on a glass"  At that point police hadn't questioned arias and by the time they did the cuts had healed.

Supreme Court denies Jodi Arias' request to set aside the option of a death sentence

Lets hope this attitude continues throughout the penalty phase of this trial.

This murder demands the death penalty; I pray that this Jury looks right past Jodi Arias's demure affectations, her Peter Pan collars strategically worn Barrettes. They hopefully have seen the empty vapid soulless eyes of Jodi Arias, the same ones that she usually keeps encased behind her cleverly procured librarian "glasses".

I have watched this women s face as witnesses testify as evidence is shown of her victims slashed body and there is no doubt she is an Sociiopath and thus an actress albeit transparent at times.

However, with all of the violent crime that has befallen our nation our societies, mental illness personality disorders are beginning to receive a bit more attention as its become painfully clear via repetitive violence that if we are to stop this escalation of violent crime,  everyone needs to take responsibility for increasing their own awareness and knowledge regarding all aberrant behaviors, not simply "mental illness" as some vague culprit.

What is ot the answer is a scary trend I've noticed of late borne of fear and ignorance -  and  as usual the media is guilty of spreading misinformation that can lead to prejudice of anyone who is different behavioral wise lumping brain disease such as autism and aspergers syndrome with completely different mental or mood disorders all the way to the statistically most dangerous anti social personality disorder ie a sociopath. also known as a psychopath.

We are just not used to females especially ones that are attractive and carry themselves with a girlish demeanor  Do not be fooled. Women can be extremely dangerous narcissists and sociopaths - ie think Carla Homolka, one of the worst sociopath serial rapist/ murderess in Canadian history. Blonde blue eyed she helped her fiance kill her own sister and 3 other teenagers whom the pair kidnapped and held for days in their middle class house before murdering them and disposing of their bodies.

Sociopathology is undoubtedly one of the personality disorders that Jodi Arias has it involves a lack of empathy and true conscience. It has been bandied about that arias is also a borderline personality disordered women which as an armchair researcher I'd say BPD is on the mark as well; Arias fits about 9 of the required personality symptomology in the DSM .- the bible for mental illnesses personality disorders and brain syndromes.

The lesson that we can all take from this terrible murder is to acquire as much knowledge about the symptoms of personality disorders there are a gaggle of them including narcissism which have the potential to make for dangerous relationships be it romantic workplace friendship or family. Nigh is the time that our society makes this knowledge mandatory for all people, startling with our teenagers at age appropriate levels. I personally knew nothing of this until almost being killed by a sociopath who I didn't recognize as such. Years after the crimes I felt the need to validate what had happened and began this journey of research and awareness with my mind and heart intent on helping others to not make the same near fatal  mistake borne of simple innocent ignorance.

We cannot afford to be "innocent" any longer. While Personality disorders do not immediately equate with violence, ( there are a bevy of them) but several of them such as Sociopath Narcissists Borderline Pds etc do carry a much higher statistical likelihood of committing  violent behavior.

At the very least many will cause constant upheaval in the lives that they intersect with as well they will  more often commit criminal behaviors such as fraud, destruction of property, stealing, stalking assault and murder, than people who do not have dangerous personality disorders.

Investigate this entire realm there are many good websites in laymen terms that explain the key features warning signs etc of  such persons.. We cannot afford the ignorance we have allowed ourselves often because it simply doesn't seem to apply to our lives Learn from this horrible murder, pass the knowledge to your ge appropriate children adult and even teenagers. Our future generations are depending on us to lay the foundation of a new necessitated awareness about people who commit crimes and may not fit the image we have painted of " the bad guy"

Connecticut's High Court To Hear Death Penalty Repeal

Connecticuts HighCourt To Hear Death Penalty Repeal

I knew this was coming when I listened to Susan Storrey in the so called public meeting concerning the Death Penalty repeal in Connecticut over a year ago.

Within a meeting at the capital where each person was supposed to have ten minutes at the most to speak thier mind regarding the death penalty repeal bill,, Ms Storrey, a public official, the states lead public defender, blatantly and rudely ignored the time limit using the meeting as a platform to spout her usual pro-criminal agenda - and not one of the chair persons "overseeing" the meeting, asked her to stop, or insisted her time was up.

In the end Ms Storrey,  was allowed to speak for 28 minutes. Everyone else respected the ten minute time limit.

I watched and listened as the tell-tale bell sounded, that was supposed to signal that the speakers time was "up" and storrey ignored it, clearly believing that like her criminal clients, the rules do not apply. There was limited finite time for the meeting and many many Connecticut citizens who felt strongly about this bill were waiting to speak.

And this meeting was primarily for the public - the citizens of Connecticut  to voice their opinions on a death penalty repeal bill that a recent Quinnnipiac poll proved a 68 percent of Connecticut residents were against it. Most people living in this state wanted the death penalty to remain a prerogative for prosecutors in the worst murder cases.

Ms Storrey as a public official had plenty of official platforms to air her by now well known, and what I  believe to be oft time dangerous- pro-criminal opinions  both regarding the death penalty and a host of other issues and bills concerning violent crime.

I had listened to Storrey opining her rhetoric about violent criminals, murderers and rapists in legislative sessions for years I always found her dour bossy over the top protectiveness of criminals beyond zealous and insulting to victims of crime everywhere.

I was particularly disgusted however when she exceeded the time limit so aggregiously with nary an apology and proceeded to state that although this Repeal bill was supposed to be prospective- meaning anyone convicted of a capital crime or crimes prior to the passage of the repeal would have to make the 20 year ridiculously arduous appeals laden traverse towards an actual death sentence. .

She admitted right then and there that one of the first things she would do when the repeal passed would be to fight the prospective portion of  it with her usual vigor. (The latter my words not hers).

This was amazing to me.

Not that Storrey already had plans to get rid of this little tiny bit of justice that was left intact within this carefully crafted repeal bill. I expected that. But the fact that she was admitting right up front that one of the first things she planned to do once the bill was passed, was to work on scrapping the tiny part of it that left the littlest piece of justice for the victims of murderers already convicted and sentenced prior to the passage of the Repeal. The victims include the family members loved ones nieghbors and all others traumatized by the crimes.

The so called "prospective" portion of the bill was extremely important to many, many people, albeit as theoretical as it was;  If anyone has any doubts regarding the disingenuosness of the prospective application we now were certain it was merely a political throw, a bone to the people of the state  from the crafters of said bill.

They knew that a without the prospective portion A) the bill might not pass  ie several Republican Legislators actually voted  pro-repeal and the mostly democratic legislators knew there was waffling even among some of their own - particularly due to the slap in the face timing of this Repeal Bill.

The Connecticut Judiciary Committee actually drafted the Repeal within months of the four year long overdue resolution of the Petit family murders, which had finally resulted in the two men who murdered Jennifer Hayley and Michaela Petit to be convicted and given the Death Penalty.

Even the most "liberal" minded legislators had common sense; they knew what the results of the recent Qunnipiac polls were regarding the death penalty repeal. The polls in fact had been taken for years and consistently every time the poll was taken the results were always against repealing against abolition - Thus, if not for at least the notion of a prospective repeal, the outcry would be so enormous that it threatened to topple the bill's passage. Therefore they disingenuously and dishonorably penned in the prospective portion to pacify, and even the Governor gave his official lip service via the media convincingly reiterating that "the repeal would not affect those already on death row".

Now this wasn't by any means exclusively about the horrible Petit family crimes; there were ten men on death row who the state of Connecticut spent millions of dollars on, and a great deal of energy ,affording them due process; these men were given trials with the State absorbing the cost of both their defense and their prosecution.

And after all the necessary mitigating and aggravating factors were weighed in, a jury of their peers had found every one of these men guilty and deserving of the death penalty.  In a state well known to be extremely reluctant to pursue the death penalty in the first place, let alone apply it, this so called prospective application of a repeal was a no brainer and it also was the least the crafters of the bill and its advocates - could do.

And now here we are.

Ms Storrey  basically promised she'd immediately go to work (with her state financed like minded cronies) to the higher courts to rid the bill of its prospective portion, this, before the repeal was even  passed. Indeed, she added that she would fight for the inmates on death row to be allowed back into the general prison population. because she felt that the nature of death row was " cruel and unusual punishment'

I recall wondering (as I always do in the cases of  those who fight so ardently for the rights of violent criminals, if someone in Ms Storreys immediate family was butchered and/or raped, would she still feel that a isolated area was cruel and unusual for the murderer and/or rapist of her loved ones?

I have gotten a lot of flak for posing this question in the past - and yet it is an essential question. It is not designed to be mean spirited or hostile. I believe in fact that this question must be put to every single public official and or "lawmaker" involved in making and passing bills that cost lives. Our state legislature has seemed to grow increasingly pro-criminal   apathetic at best to the victims of  violent crime.
.

It is a fair question, not cruel, as a commenter on my blog once declared regarding a post that I wrote concerning the death penalty bill. This was during the period when I had comments enabled on my Blog. Unfortunately, I had to disable all comments when I began to get some really ugly trollers, and the back and forth vitriol threatened to consume the blog. Thus, with regret for all of the intelligent comments, including those who disagreed with me in an respectful fashion, I shut the comments down.

To all of us, the issue of violent crime should be held above all others. But many ask feeling angry and helpless "what can we do?"

For starters, let us use this, the fact that our state government passed such a misguided and dishonest bill, a bill that most of it's citizens did not want, as a watershed moment to commit or recommit ourselves to the cause of fighting and preventing violent crime.

We can do this separately and together, as participating watchdogs for each-others safety and well being.

And lets use our votes accordingly. Every one of our legislators are voted in by the public. Clearly we need to be more discerning, or more active in the voting process. Every legislative session is televised on Connecticut's cable station. Watch these sessions carefully and listen. Get a feel for your particular legislative Representative  Pay careful attention to how they vote upon important issues involving crime and sentencing.

For those of you who dont know, there is a Connecticut Legislative Website that publishes the vote" roll call" for every bill presented to our State legislature. If your area legislator is soft on crime within their rhetoric and their voting history on crime bills, vote them out. Cross Party lines if, and when necessary. This transcends politics.

Organize citizen action groups to petition and lobby for tougher laws especially for violent crime and repeat offenders. Fight the ever popular early release programs that threaten public safety. and  stiffer Probation  and Parole for violent offenders.

Wall Street Journal investigates growing strife in Boston Bombing Suspects Family

This is a very good article in the Wall street Journal giving us an inside look into the increasingly turbulent family life of Tamerlan Tsarnaeva,  the older of two brothers who is believed to be the main instigator of the Boston Marathon bombings. The bombings as just about everyone knows killed two people including a beautiful little boy and severely injured hundreds of innocent human beings..

Once again it would appear that another Sociopath reeks havoc, bloodshed and loss of life; this time using extremist religious beliefs as his lament- ie excuse to exercise power over others, in the form of indiscriminate violence. It seems clear from this article that Tamerlan had begun to feel more and more powerless over his own "station" in life in the past year and as the circumstances frayed more and more, his bitterness became more focused at those around him especially anyone who seemed to have it better or worse yet was content.

It is a shame that Muslims in general are likely to be deeply affected by some of the national anger that these young men created using the mask of this particular religion as their (handy) weapon of choice. Let us hope that articles like this help the public to understand that this is not a reflection of the Muslim faith In fact I find it very ironic that Tamerlan gave up boxing because his new found zealotry dictated that the Koran says that a Muslim may not punch another man in the face, yet he had no problem killing an innocent child with pre-meditated homemade shrapnel bomb precision designed to most effectively  maim and kill.

In the meantime, we continue to pray for the victims and their  families and Godspeed to the wounded survivors as they need all of our prayers love and healing thoughts.

Lookism, Gender, Sex Roles in Jodi Arias Murder trial

Its time to address the massive media gorge-fest on the Jodi Arias Murder trial.

First of all, It is a horrible and brutal crime.

Yes it differs from many partner/intimate murders in that there was a tremendous amount of "overkill" such as a gunshot to the Travis Alexander's Head, over 29 stab wounds to his body and skull and a huge throat slash that is believed by the medical examiner to be the final act of violence that ultimately caused Travis's instantaneous death.

These injuries were borne of Rage, they clearly are not injuries that indicate an act of self defense, as Jodi Arias and her legal minions are rather ridiculously claiming in this, the third scenario that Arias has proffered to authorities since her first Police questioning in 2008 when the Travis Alexanders body was discovered by his friends stuffed into his shower stall..

But these are not the reasons that the media is swarming all over this case. I am sad to say that I have seen murders with far worse brutality, torture and loss of life that barely got a mention in the mainstream media, never mind this level of obsession.

From all vantage points I believe its fair to say that this trial has received the attention that it has because 1) the confessed murderer is a woman, 2) (and substantially more important in our culture because Jodi Aria's face and figure happen to be considered attractive:  Arias is somewhat baby faced and soft spoken and as such too many people are having an inordinately difficult time  reckoning her acts of violence with her appearance, her manner.

Lastly, is the the role of sex and technology that is strewn throughout the case. In this, the age of social media sites being almost a guaranteed staple of everyday life for most people under the age of 30, both Arias and Alexander left a sizable Internet presence,  which unfortunately is adding more to the circus- like allure of the case, rather than being utilized as an extremely useful evidenciary base, both to better examine the two people involved in this intimate violence murder as well as  the progression and dynamics of their " relationship" the evolution of which is literally outlined time stamped, all via a collection of both Internet postings emails, personal blogs and even private videos of the two interacting.

And that's not all. As many people know, Jodi Arias and Travis posed for and took nude photos of each-other purportedly after having sexual, relations on the day of the murder, as well as photo's that literally led up to the murder, one even accidently caught a picture of Travis Alexanders body being dragged by Arias into the shower.

Lets face it,  women killing is becoming less and less rare these days, thus, this alone certainly does not account for the degree of voracity with which the media and the public have literally been consuming this trial. With all  violent crimes on the rise in our country, it only stands to reason that this would be a natural evolutionary result ie more women are committing murder. The same thing can be said of children and teenagers whose crimes appear to be getting more serious at younger ages - violent crimes such as rape, aggravated assault, manslaughter and murder are being committed by teenagers and children at an alarmingly escalating rate.

And please do not misunderstand my feelings about this or any other savage murder.

I am in no way trying to negate the brutality and tragedy of Travis Alexander's murder. I immedietely imagine his terror and panic and the ensuing pain,as the murder scene suggests that Travis did his absolute best to try to fend away the hell bent upon murder Arias. The defensive wounds were substantial and the blood evidence show that he didn't die easily despite the many many stab wounds and the gunshot to his head.

I also do not wish to take our collective attention away from the bottom line important symptoms of personality disorders which do not technically fall into the mental illness ilk as these disorders share traits that involve a permanent problem with perception of themselves and the world around them often narcissistic and often predatory, making them frequent commiters of crime, often violent.

As well PD Personas cause a general chaotic mess in the lives of whomever winds up  becoming involved with them be it by chance or by choice. ie through work, family or a platonic friendship.
The signs and symptoms of personality disorders are alien to the average person. They were once alien to me as well. It was only after becoming victimized and maimed by a Sociopath that I began to explore the realm of abnormal psychiatry and within that quest, came  upon the answers to many of my questions regarding the behavior of the man that ultimately victimized me so severely.

After seeing murder after murder committed by men with the same psychiatric criteria again anad again and again, I began to see that as a culture we can no longer afford this ignorance or apathy insofar as the psychological symptoms of the entire spectrum of Personality disorders with Anti social Personality disorder at the forefront but not exclusively so as we see here with Arias where borderline PD can be as or more dangerous to unsuspecting others.

I feel deeply for Travis Alexanders family members, and I think of them every time I read about a given day's testimony, or a certain piece of evidence, all of which has been on a constant stream detailed for public consumption on every major Media website, blog, streaming YouTube and  Network and cable and television.

I think about how his sisters feel I watch them sitting in the surreal atmosphere of  that courtroom - A place where the killer of your loved one sits yards away from you , occasionally whispering with her lawyers, nodding, even smiling flipping her hair as if this was any other place on any other day,... - behaving as if she were a regular person just having a little chat.

Only she and every other murderer or rapist that sits flanked by thier helpful lawyers are not " regular people"

And you know it, and everyone else knows it - but..... this is how we do it in this country" Even though it grates on the very last fibers of your being that the killer of your loved one is not only not chained to that chair like the animal that you know them to be, but rather they are treated with a certain deference a normalcy that belies the brutality of thier actions - and they are afforded a dignity that simply boggles the mind and wrenches the heart of every victim of violent crime who has sat in a courtroom with a man or woman who victimized them, or victimized their family member.

It doesn't help that years have passed since the family members received that terrible call by the police; the one that first broke the terrible news - that their son was found dead,  murdered in a vicious and horrible fashion.

This huge disparity between when a crime or set of crimes are committed and when the " case"  finally reaches the advent of resolution ie presumably " justice"  in the form of a trial, is hideous and utterly unnecessary Yet in most states this huge painful expanse of time hovers between three to five years. This is obscene and does massive damage to the prosecution of a murder a rape kidnapping assault - any violent crime where a human being has been seriously violated.

The passage of time after a violent crime  always always serves the defendant and it is at the very core of survivors pain that our courts and government allow indeed expect and will often defend the rote 3 to 4 year wait for capital murder trials to finally begin/ Just as the witnesses including Police and medical examiners are beginning the natural self protective process of memory dulling - symptomatic of Post traumatic stress disorder in fact" BLOCKING"

In any event, the whole nature of waiting years for the advent of justice only aids and abets the "defendant" (which we as a civilized society must refer to even the most guilty perpetrators of violence) In this case Arias has confessed" and as such can be called the " murdeer, despite the aforementioned three versions including ninja like men up to the current 'I cant remember anything except shooting him for body slamming me for dropping the camera- nonsense shes selling us now in her most timid girlish tone possible.

The reality is this: Years after Travis Alexander a thirty year old young man was virtually butchered in his own bathroom,  everyone in the courtroom is donning their very best manners, and behaving with full decorum. This is surreal enough for the victims family, believe me.

The confessed murderess is dressed in conservative and usually girlish casual clothing, round petter pan collars etc - a stark deviation from the sexy figure hugging clothes that seemed her signature dress code prior to her arrest for Travis's murder. She often wears barrettes holding back her now naturally black hair, which was obviously dyed a near platinum blonde most of her adult life. The barrettes also add a misleading innocent appearance  to her already baby faced countenance.

At first glance I was thinking that her lawyer likely thought up this innocuous looking hair style, but as I grew to know more about Arias I considered that more than likely she herself no stranger to using her looks voice and expressions to manipulate, probably came up with what has become her hair -do of choice, along with the demure looking button down shirts and sweaters which she now wears to court daily.

The seemingly small details along with voice inflection, posture and eye contact emit everything from innocent schoolgirl to seasoned manipulator with a wide range of acting skills with which she hopes to dupe the jury.

Flanked by people paid for by the state to be her advocates her guard dogs, doing their damnedest to convince the jury that this person who killed their son their brother their friend , should be given latitude.

And this latitude that the defense attorneys seek almost always originates from some form of character bashing of the victim. the person who is in fact the embodiment of this set of crimes the human being who is no longer is alive to speak for him or herself  - because he/ she has been slaughtered -  in this case in  his own home while taking a shower.

Partner violence is an everyday occurrence in this country. Travis Alexanders murder certainly seems to be completely pre-meditated, yet..... there is a bit of a twist here; I have written in earlier Posts that Jodi Arias appears to be a classic borderline Personality disordered woman as well a  anti-social PD.And this is a quick summation based upon watching her interrogation with police reading her journals which are really revealing as they are self talk and a smattering of friends and acquaintances and their take on Arias

I  am certain that Arias had recently  reached an emotional watershed within her relationship to Travis Alexander, I believe she was beginning to feel more and more used and although she appears to have eagerly participated in this highly sexual relationship with Travis, even after they officially moved from a infatuation/relationship to a clandestine sexual relationship, Arias was unhappy with this change and was hoping that if she satiated Travis sexually, this might be a method that she could use to lure him back into the more valid " love" relationship she yearned for - or at least as close to love as a psychopath can get. Mind you this is never about actual love with both borderlines and sociopaths but rather either one or all infatuation, dependency, fear of rejection and abandonment and control.

All of these qualities are common with personality disorders in general when it comes to thier relationships with others and this is not exclusive to romantic relationships. Many a borderline personality wreaks havoc upon their family and friends lives as well workmates and even casual aquaintence s. By ther natures they are perpetually drawing attention to themselves as well as having no healthy interest in other peoples lives feelings or interests.

While I don't sense that Arias was a controlling sociopath, as a woman with several personality disorders I feel she was very comfortable using submission or at least the act of submitting, as a  means to an end in trying to get "the prize"  ie Travis Alexander. However once she made herself this vulnerable over and again and Travis only grew more disaffected , her humiliation grew as did her anger especially when became obvious that Travis seemed to almost be repulsed by her - at least once he was sexually sated.

As well the type of sex that the two engaged in is somewhat degrading to a woman unless handled sensitively by a man and this did not seem to be the case here. Arias described a good deal of anal sex between the two  which Travis reportedly assured Arias didn't count as sex within his Mormon faith as pre marital sex, just as oral sex didnt "count"

Arias related to her therapist a scene on the day of the murder where she broke a CD of Travis's and he began to grow very  angry, citing that his dog ran from the room as he always did whenever Travis became angr. This detail seemed believable to me for whatever reason the descriptiveness, my own experience with animals that flee sensing human anger and I do not believe that this part of her story was a fabrication. She claimed that she apologized and he then had rough anal sex with her and seemed to " calm down as a result"

This I also believed. My guess was that Travis showing his temper and impatience with Arias was fairly commonplace; this was also corroborated in a taped conversation with Arias where he promised her that her punishment would be worse than the crime if she didn't tell him what he wanted to know"

The inner struggle that Jodi arias was having regarding her feelings for Travis and moreover his lack of feelings for her his growing distance as evidenced by emails and corroborated by friends ie one friend of Travis actually called Arias a "non-issue"  in Travis's life. was culminating into a gigantic pain and simultaneous rage witthin Jodi Arias.

The comment about Arias being a non issue" to me is very very telling for  it indicates that this close friend of Travis Alexander was privy to the fact that Travis's interest in Arias was sexual only, and as other friends of Travis described many who saw the two in public never even knew they were a couple" even for the short time that they were actually dating the time period where Travis had Jodi baptized into the Mormon faith for example. This was an act that Arias likely took to be a sign of the seriousness of the union.

As the union quickly unfurled and she was rather quickly relegated to secret sex partner- Arias's feelings of rejection grew - the reality that he was dating other women only compounded her anger and existing self esteem issues  (these are often a major contributor to borderline Personality disordered women.

We know that Jodi Arias was aware of Travis's trip to Cancun and we know that Arias had originally been Travis's planned companion  Her name had been on the tickets weeks earlier, and now another woman's name had been substituted for hers. This anger borne of a possessive infatuation whereupon arias demeaned herself sexually in hopes of gaining this man's OFFICIAL approval seemed to her the only control she had over this man she knew was growing more and more emotionally detached and distant. She was clearly an attractive woman but her lack of emotional maturity is evident.

If one reads Travis's online dating profiles, listens to his motivational speaking gigs, and even a few of  some of the taped conversations between he and Arias, a picture begins to emerge of a young man that had some glaring issues of his own, particularly his views and behaviors in regards to women.

Within some conversations with friends and with Arias herself he shows what appears to be a classic maddonna/whore complex, and a propensity to be boastful with women as one might expect from an immature adolescent - not a thirty year old man.

My impression is that Travis Alexander was emotionally very immature himself, he showed a misogynistic streak, especially regarding sex.. Even he himself admitted in an email to a male friend
" I always have been a bit of a sociopath."

This was extremely telling, as it shows that Travis himself knew that he had at least some of the qualities of a sociopath ; Sexually he certainly seemed to lack something akin to a conscience, in fact we hear from his own mouth again and again a demeaning streak towards  in taped conversations with Jodi Arias.

On the other hand when one watches a snippet of video from a group gathering when Travis and Arias had been dating only a month or two, Arias is seen literally latched onto Travis with a decidedly childlike neediness that left no room for anything but her. Interest in what he was saying seemed nil, as did the notion of actual intimacy. Thus finding the common grounds that lead to such intimacy certainly was something Arias was incapable of, as are most borderline PDs and Sociopaths ASPD

My feeling is that these two young people had a commonality of self-based emotional disorders. However on the surface as the relationship moved forward ie 4 months to all of his friends Travis certainly seemed to be the one being pursued by Arias - sometimes rabidly. There were instances where Travis's tires were slashed and from the testimony I have read it is generally believed that Arias committed these crimes as the relationship fizzled and it became obvious that the two were no longer a couple. Travis was in fact dating other women openly and although Arias at times appeared to accept this, my belief is that she was extremely distraught and angry over his involvements.
I listened to her descriptions with her psychologist regarding the debasing nature of her sexual relationship with Travis as the union traversed from its brief boyfriend girlfriend status to simply clandestine sexual forays whereupon Travis would immediately become completely indifferent and sometimes cruel the moment the sex was over.

Although Arias obviously has psychopathic traits that doesn't mean that everything she says is a lie and I PERSONALLY found her descriptions of Travis's treatment of her during this period to be very credible. I listened to the tapes with interest as they revealed much more than most people think. Indeed I believe that it was in fact this persistent switch of Travis Alexander; one moment giving her his undivided attention, albeit sexual it still was a form of intense connection to her and filled a need) to immediate indifference and emotional coldness once the sex was over, this contributed to Arias's anger and feelings of being used and discarded

This ongoing albeit secretive sexual relationship was actually help build Arias a classic  Borderline with all of the immature emotional attachment and abandonment issues  into a frenzy as it became clearer and clearer that it was not going to lead to anything "real"  added to the jealousy that Travis was seemingly treating other women with" respect" thta she craved; dating them openly, giving them the perks of legitimacy, taking one on a trip that she had originally been invited to, it was actually amazing that arias lasted a long as she did, considering the combustive factors involved: A women who had at least two personality disorders who was recently rejected rather publicly ie the Cancun tickets and last minute partner switch Travis made for the group vacation..

Thus the young man that spurned her, was continuing to see her for sexual relations albeit under cover  again which likely added to her sense of rejection and anger. Now for his part, Trevor knew that Arias was prone to displays of  jealousy, she had been caught and admitted to stalking behaviors with him as well as actually committing vandalism another serious partner violence crime, when she supposedely slashed his car tires on several occasion, reportedly out of jealousy that he was seeing other women at the time.

In the end I think that this murder had been bouncing around Arias's mind for well over a month.

Once  she received that last phone call from Travis asking her to come over to his place, she knew by then this was the usual "booty call" that she had become accustomed to and seemingly resigned to.

Up until that point I believe Jodi Arias truly believed that through sex she could win back Travis alexander. For 2 months this was all she could garner from him and she continued to participate eagerly  it seemed, albeit hoping it would eventually lead to the official relationship she had enjoyed so fleetingly.

I believe Arias made up her mind that she was not going to be in the closet and thus humiliated anymore and certainly she wasn't going to " let" any other woman have what she couldn't have. She began putting her plan together.: Hair dyed from blonde to brown, a car that was as different from her own car rented. She had taken her  grandmother's gun and made it appear a robbery several months prior to the murder.

This is key as it shows that Arias had been toying with the notion of killing Travis for some time. Unfortunately the police could not prove that the gun was definitely the gun used to shoot Alexander in his head, the bullet however was from the exact same caliber gun as the grandmothers gun which police believe Arias staged a robbery in order to cover up the guns disappearance.

That days sex romp did not bring back warm and fuzzy feelings to Travis Alexander egarding Jodi Arias. She knew it likely would not when she packed her bag to leave for his house that day.
Shed lost the "boyfriend girlfriend  status with Travis yet continued to have sexual relations with him, as both a way that she could be the center of his world, albeit for a moment - and stay connected as well, holding out a childish hope that his propensity to let his hormones dominate  might just win her back. At some point Travis put Jodi's name on that ticket to Cancun, and  likely the fact that another women was going to be in her rightful place was  one of the last things that pushed Arias over her already teetering edge.

Torrington COMES FULL CIRCLE :Once Again Confronting Social issues re Violence against Women and Girls

Next month will mark the 30th anniversary of the vicious attempted murder of Torrington, Connecticut, resident Tracey Thurman.

After police repeatedly failed to protect her from an abusive husband, her story brought about a nationwide revolutionin how police and courts approach domestic violence.

Today, Torrington has the opportunity to lead another revolution on behalf of victims.

This time, it’s sexual violence that is rocking the community. Again, the world is watching. And again, the world can learn from how Torrington responds. Because the attitudes Torrington must confront plague Steubenville, Ohio, Santa Clara, California, Halifax, Nova Scotia, and small towns and big cities everywhere.
It’s been called “rape culture.” Fundamentally, it starts with the notion that girls and women are “less than.” There for the sexual pleasure of men. And that men and boys can’t control themselves.

Rape culture teaches us that girls are “asking for it” based on what they wear, what they drink, who they hang out with, where they walk at night.

Rape culture teaches us that boys “can’t help” but give in to nature and rape a girl who commits one of those sins. Like, you know, walking down the street, or wearing a skirt.

Torrington kids have picked up on every bit of this. They’ve been listening.

That’s how you get a social media message like this after one of their male football player friends was charged with rape: “Young girls acting like whores there’s no punishment for that men acting like boys is a sentence.” February 21, 2013, Torrington, Connecticut.

We know more now about what allegedly happened to the young girls who were bullied in that Twitter message and many others.
In court documents unsealed Friday, we learned that one of the 13-year-old girls that Torrington High School football players Joan Toribio and Edgar Gonzalez are accused of raping says sherepeatedly said “No,” she didn’t want to have sex, but “it happened” anyway.

We learned that the child was given alcohol, including a shot of alcohol poured into her mouth by one of the men. We learned that she was given drugs. We learned that her memory of how saying “no” over and over again went to having sex was “fuzzy” because she was drunk and high. We learned that her arm was bent behind her back in the process of convincing her to have intercourse.

Up until reporters convinced a judge to reveal these details, here’s what the community, including the classmates who were bullying these girls, had learned from Torrington Police about the case:

This was statutory rape.

This was “just a matter of age difference,” prosecuted because the law says an 18-year-old can’t have sex with a 13-year-old.

This was “consensual,” not “forcible.”

We’ll leave it to police and prosecutors to explain why there are no charges of “forcible” rape in this case despite what the warrant details.

But regardless of the statute under which this case is prosecuted, we must change the way we talk about rape.

Police should never have used the words “just,” “consensual” and “not forcible” in describing any kind of rape, even if this had been a purely “statutory” case without the troubling aggravating factors that have since come to light.

A child can’t consent. The balance of power between a child and adult builds “force” into the equation of sexual contact. From manipulation, to a child’s desire for approval and acceptance, to the intimidation of physical size, and on and on. And the warrants in the Torrington case show all of those factors and more. It’s never “just a matter of age difference.”
Thirty years ago, it is horrifying to think that Torrington police would see Tracey Thurman as not having the right to protection against her abuser because, fundamentally, they saw women as the property of their husbands.

Today, it is horrifying to think that Torrington police knew every detail outlined in those warrants but went before TV cameras and newspaper reporters and described the Torrington High School football rape case as “consensual” out of a fundamental belief that the girls were asking for it and the young men were just being boys.

That’s rape culture. Torrington must help end it.
